Friday, February 6, 2015 marked the 12-year anniversary of The American Heart Association’s “National Wear Red Day”. This massive national public awareness day is held the first Friday in February to raise awareness about heart disease being the No. 1 killer of women.

Heart disease and stroke kill 1 in 3 women, yet it’s 80% preventable.

Wear Red Day shoe selfieTo show our commitment to reducing risk, improving health, and saving women’s lives, Speare Memorial Hospital employees wore red from top to toe.

Tips from our Cardiac Rehab Program to help you
Build a Better Heart

  1. Know Your Numbers. Maintain a healthy weight and control your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.
  2. “Butt” Out! If you smoke, now is the time to quit.
  3. Move It! Get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day to maintain a healthy heart. More physical activity will be needed if you are trying to lose weight.
  4. Eat Smart. Whole grains, fruits and vegetables provide a solid foundation for a healthy diet.
  5. Chill Out! Take time to relax, refresh and rejuvenate to better manage stress. Get at least eight hours of sleep a day.
  6. Check Up. If you haven’t had a physical recently, call your primary care physician to schedule one. Request and discuss your cardiac risk assessment.
