Speare Memorial Hospital Celebrates National Physical Therapy Month with Focus on Mobility and Independence
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – When U.S. diplomat Nazanin Soroush Kahler began searching for the right place to welcome her third child, she was thousands of miles away at her posting in Saudi Arabia. After exploring her options, she and her husband, fellow Foreign Service officer Nathaniel Kahler, chose Plymouth, N.H., as their family’s home base—and Speare Memorial Hospital as the place to deliver their baby.
The Kahlers’ careers in the Foreign Service have taken them across the globe, raising their two young children—ages 4 and 2—along the way. But as their family grew, they wanted a place in the United States that they could return to every year. Plymouth, with its vibrant and family-friendly atmosphere, stood out as the perfect fit.
“ We wanted a place for the kids to call home,” Nathaniel said.
After a 17-hour flight from the Middle East, Nazanin met with the team at Plymouth OB/GYN within days of arriving. She was introduced to all four physicians—Drs. Joseph Ebner, Elizabeth Disney, Jennifer Bentwood, and Taylor Augustine—something she says was a new and welcome experience compared to the larger hospitals where she had previously delivered.
“ They all wanted to know me before I gave birth,” she said.
When baby Ahva was born, Nazanin said the difference in care at Speare was clear. Unlike her prior experience at a large Virginia hospital, where more than ten people were present during delivery, the birth at Speare was intimate, with only the physician, two nurses, and a pediatrician in the room.
“ It was much more personal,” she said, noting that the presence of a pediatrician focused on the baby’s care was a reassuring touch not always common in delivery rooms.
Speare Memorial Hospital’s Birthing Suite combines modern medical technology with a family-centered approach. The suite is equipped with advanced tools, including integrated IV pumps for safe medication dosing, portable infant warmers with built-in resuscitation equipment, and specially designed bassinets that make newborn care easier for mothers, especially following a C-section. Parents are also encouraged to personalize their birth experience, whether they choose natural or medically assisted deliveries.
“The birth experience at Speare was phenomenal—personal, homey, and relaxed. They take very good care of you. Speare is doing something outstanding here, and I want others to know about it”, Nazanin said.
Through Plymouth OB/GYN, the Birthing Suite, and Plymouth Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, Speare Memorial Hospital provides a continuum of family-centered care—from pregnancy through the teen years—delivered locally by board-certified providers and a compassionate team.
