10th Annual Speare Shuffle 5K 2025
Speare Memorial Hospital Expands Gastroenterology Services with Dr. Jonathan Lamphier at Plymouth General Surgery

November 4-9, 2019 is the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) 10th Annual Allied Ophthalmic Personnel Week and White Mountain Eye Care is celebrating our Tech Team.

Ophthalmic Technicians improve the delivery and quality of eye care and are crucial members of the eye care team. The role of an ophthalmic tech is constantly evolving and technicians are now involved in almost every aspect of helping to run the ophthalmic practice. Ophthalmic Technicians assist the Ophthalmologist and Optometrist by conducting the preliminary examination, assisting in minor surgical procedures, performing various ancillary tests and more.

IJAHPO has levels of Certification for ophthalmic personnel. The first level of certification is COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant). We’re proud to announce that one of our technicians, Kimberly Biagiotti, recently passed her test and is now Nationally Certified at the COA level. Kim joined our practice in December 2017. She completed a home study course and on-the-job training program through WME in order to meet the pre-requisites to apply to take the test.
Qualities of a Great Ophthalmic Technician – from Dr. Musco:
- Mind Reading: It may not be realistic to think an ophthalmic technician is a mind reader, but great ophthalmic technicians know what the doctor needs before they ask. And OURS do.
- Excellent Communication Skills: Explaining what you’re doing and why you do it plus having a brief conversation about side effects, as well as expectations before patients leave their appointment is a vital part of your job as an ophthalmic technician. And OURS know that.
- Working in Harmony: Walking with patients to the exam room, not six yards ahead of them. And OURS do that.
- Flexibility: Patience and speed are not mutually exclusive, finding the balance between both is what makes a stellar ophthalmic technician. And OURS are finely balanced.
- Empathy: The patient who skipped all their follow-up appointments but walks in with pain and a decrease in vision requires empathy, not scolding. And OURS have hearts of gold.
